Boat carrying 71 suspected asylum seekers (invaders) intercepted off Ashmore Islands

A BOAT with
71 suspected asylum seekers (invaders) on board has been intercepted in Australian waters.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the boat was intercepted by ACV Holdfast Bay last night, northwest of the Ashmore Islands.

"Initial indications suggest there are
71 passengers (invaders) and three crew (smugglers) on board," Mr O'Connor said in a statement tonight.

"The vessel was initially detected by a Customs and Border Protection Dash 8 aircraft, operating under the control of Border Protection Command."

The suspected asylum seekers
(invaders) are en route to Christmas Island for security, identity and health checks (then they'll be off to Darwin and/or Leonora).

"While their nationality is yet to be confirmed, if these asylum seekers
(invaders) are Afghans, the processing suspension introduced by the Government on 9 April 2010 will apply," Mr O'Connor said.

The total for July is 5 boats carrying 258 invaders and 14 reported smugglers. The tally so far for 2010 on the 12th of July (the 193rd day of 2010) is 78 boats carrying 3,690 invaders and 194 reported smugglers.
